“May the Fates smile upon me.” Rylander stared at the ceiling as if summoning the gods themselves. “She’s nervous about the consummation of the wedding.” The words rolled off his tongue so fast it took me a moment to absorb their meaning. But as I did, laughter bubbled up and soon erupted out of my mouth. “I’m so sorry.” I held my stomach as I continued to chortle, rocking my torso with the vibration. “I don’t know what to say but…” I swallowed, trying to compose myself. Rylander’s shoulders tightened, lifting toward his reddened ears. I coughed to choke my amusement. “I am sorry for my mirth. It’s just I hadn’t really given the matter much thought.” Because there would be no marriage, but of course, I couldn’t explain that to King Rylander. I placed my hand on the king’s arm as I did to steady my men. “I had hoped the princess and I could find friendship first and see where that leads. If that’s agreeable to you.” The king rubbed his hands over his face, letting out a long breath. “Gods, thank you.” I squeezed his bicep before letting go. “Well, this has been an…” “Rye.” Footsteps sounded. “Rye, where are you?” A familiar voice—heard only once but carved deep in the channels of my mind—yelled as the doors to the throne room swung open and hit the adjacent wall. Fiery hair framing perfect heart-shaped face and a slim frame stormed into the room. Exertion painted her cheeks pink. “Did you know the duke is here, in the kingdom. He failed to…” Her blue eyes widened as they connected to mine. Her mouth dropped open. I tilted my head. My throat felt thick, my words sticking there. This couldn’t be… “Duke of Eloqua, may I introduce my sister, the Princess of Cava.” Rylander waved between us. “Princess, this is—” “You wretched man!” The princess paced into the room, practically breaking into a jog. Her gaze traveled my face as my heart plunked into the pit of my stomach. “You…. How are you even…” Rylander stood aghast, appraising us. Out of all the fair maidens! The Fates were more humorous than I gave them credit for. I didn’t know whether to pummel the old gals or kiss them. But when Savina’s cheeks inflamed, I knew my curse would at least be enjoyable. My lips pulled into a lopsided grin. I extended my hand. “The name’s Conleth. And yours?” The princess’s hands curled into fists by her sides. “None of your damn concern.”
